Affordable Startup Names
Quality domains that respect your budget
Smart Spending Starts Early
Bootstrapped founders and early-stage startups face a constant tradeoff between quality and cost. A $10,000 premium domain might be objectively better, but if it depletes capital you need for product development or marketing, it's the wrong choice.
The good news is that domain quality and domain price aren't perfectly correlated. A $1,500 domain can absolutely be a great foundation for a successful company. The key is understanding what matters and what doesn't.
What matters: the name is pronounceable, memorable, and not embarrassing. It works for your target audience. You can build a brand around it. What doesn't matter as much: whether it's .com vs .io, whether it's 5 letters vs 7, whether it sounds "premium" to domain investors.
Many successful companies launched with modest domains. Instagram was Burbn. Twitch was Justin.tv. Even Google was backrub.stanford.edu. The domain didn't make them succeed - the product and team did. But a decent domain certainly didn't hurt.
The domains here are selected for startup founders who need to allocate resources wisely. Quality enough to be proud of, affordable enough to preserve runway.
Preserve Runway
Keep capital for product and growth. A good domain is important, but it shouldn't bankrupt you.
Still Brandable
Affordable doesn't mean low quality. These names are still memorable and professional.
Upgrade Path
Start lean, upgrade later. Many companies rebrand after success - it's a proven path.
Launch Faster
Stop deliberating and start building. These domains are good enough to launch with today.
What We Look For in Budget Domains
When selecting domains for this collection, we filter for names that clear a quality bar despite their lower price point. Not every cheap domain is a good cheap domain. Here's what we look for:
First, pronounceability. Can someone hear this domain in conversation and type it correctly? This is non-negotiable at any price point. If people can't spell it after hearing it, it will create friction forever.
Second, neutrality. The name shouldn't carry negative associations, be difficult to say in professional contexts, or limit the company to a narrow use case. We want domains that are flexible enough to grow with your business.
Third, reasonable length. We don't include domains that are so long they become unwieldy. Generally, we cap at 10-12 characters for the name portion. Shorter is better, but short-ish at a good price beats expensive-short.
Finally, we consider the extension. Modern extensions like .io, .co, and .app are acceptable for tech startups. Traditional .com is great but not required. We exclude extensions that carry baggage or aren't widely recognized.
The result is a collection of names you could legitimately build a company around, at prices that leave room in your budget for everything else you need.
