Yes, Spaceship is legit for buying a domain. It is an ICANN-accredited registrar (IANA ID 3862) launched by Namecheap in 2023, and it reported passing 10 million domains under management in September 2026. When you buy an aftermarket name through its SellerHub marketplace you pay the listed price, the seller covers the commission, and on SafePay deals the money is held until the domain has been transferred.

Founder holding a payment card while reviewing a domain purchase on a laptop, with a handwritten shortlist of names on the desk

This page is for someone who has landed on a Spaceship checkout, usually after clicking Buy Now on a "this domain is for sale" page, and wants to know whether it is safe to type in a card number for a four or five figure name. We can speak to that from the seller's side of the counter. BoldDomains lists its own portfolio on SellerHub and sends buyers to Spaceship's checkout, so the process below is the one our own customers go through.

Is Spaceship legit?

Spaceship is a legitimate, ICANN-accredited domain registrar. Namecheap, one of the largest registrars in the world, unveiled it in August 2023, and it was founded by Namecheap's founder Richard Kirkendall. It crossed 1 million domains under management in June 2024 and announced 10 million on September 30, 2026. A company holding that many registrations under ICANN's contract is not a fly-by-night storefront.

Public reviews point the same way. Its Trustpilot profile sits at roughly 4.3 to 4.5 out of 5 across more than 4,200 reviews at the time of writing, with about three quarters of them five star and about one in ten one star. The praise is mostly about low prices and a clean interface. The complaints worth reading before a large purchase are about account verification holds and slow support replies while a hold is being cleared. Neither is a sign of fraud, but both can cost you a day or two if you are buying against a launch date.

Is Spaceship owned by Namecheap?

Spaceship is a sister platform to Namecheap, built by the same founder and announced by Namecheap itself in 2023. They run as separate services with separate accounts. That detail matters at checkout: a Namecheap login does not work on Spaceship, so you will create a new Spaceship account to receive an aftermarket domain even if you have been a Namecheap customer for years.

How buying an aftermarket domain on Spaceship works

Registering a new name on Spaceship and buying one that somebody already owns are two different products. The second runs through SellerHub, Spaceship's marketplace, where owners list names at a fixed price, with a minimum offer, or both. Listings start at $100. A name does not have to be registered at Spaceship to be listed there, because sellers prove control by pointing nameservers or adding a DNS record.

  1. You land on the listing. Either a for-sale page on the domain itself or a marketplace like ours sends you to a Spaceship page for that one name.
  2. You add it to the cart or send an offer. Buy Now puts the name in a normal Spaceship cart. If the seller accepts offers, you can bid at or above their minimum.
  3. You create a Spaceship account. The domain will be delivered into it, so use an email address your company controls, not a personal inbox that leaves with one employee.
  4. You pay. Once an offer is agreed, the buyer has seven days to complete payment. A Buy Now purchase is paid on the spot.
  5. The name is moved to you. Spaceship's team handles the handover from the seller, and the domain appears in your account, where you can point it at your site and email.

If you would rather negotiate than pay the sticker price, read our guide to making an offer on a domain name first. A reasoned first offer saves more money than any payment method trick.

What a buyer pays on Spaceship

The listed price is the price. SellerHub's commission is charged to the seller, not added to your cart. The table shows where the money goes, based on Spaceship's published SellerHub and SafePay terms.

ChargeWho pays by defaultAmount
SellerHub marketplace commissionSeller10% of the sale price (raised from 5%)

Renewal after the purchaseBuyerSpaceship's normal rate for the extension, around $10 a year for .com

Two things in that table deserve attention. First, SafePay is the one place a buyer can end up carrying a fee, because its commission is negotiable between the parties. If a seller proposes a SafePay deal, ask who is paying the 3% or 5% before you agree on a number. Second, the renewal line is the only recurring cost, and it depends on the extension. A .com renews for about the price of lunch. A .ai renews for far more, a point we cover in what a .ai domain costs to buy and renew.

Is it safe to pay for a domain on Spaceship?

It is as safe as paying any large registrar. Spaceship accepts major credit and debit cards, wire transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and BTCPay. A card or PayPal payment keeps your issuer's dispute rights, which is a real protection on a first purchase from a seller you have never dealt with. On a SafePay transaction, the funds are held by Spaceship until the domain has been transferred, and only then released to the seller.

For most purchases under about $10,000, that is all the protection a buyer needs. Above that, some company buyers prefer a licensed third party escrow because their finance team requires it. We compare the cost of that route in Escrow.com fees for domain buyers. Whichever route you take, save the order confirmation and the invoice the same day. A purchase this size belongs in your contract management system next to the trademark filing, where the next person in your role can find proof of ownership without asking you.

Where Spaceship falls short for buyers

None of these are reasons to walk away, but you should know them before you pay.

  • A new account is mandatory. There is no guest checkout for an aftermarket name, and new accounts placing large orders are the ones most likely to hit a verification review.
  • Quality varies by seller. SellerHub is an open marketplace. Anyone can list a name from $100, so the catalogue mixes strong brands with thousands of speculative registrations, and nobody has vetted them for trademark conflicts.
  • Prices are the seller's opinion. A low commission does not make a name cheap. Check comparable sales, or read what premium domains cost, before accepting a five figure asking price.
  • Payment plans depend on the seller. SellerHub supports lease to own, but only on listings where the owner has switched it on.
  • Moving out takes patience. As at other registrars, a domain that has just changed hands is normally locked against transfer to another registrar for 60 days. You can use it immediately. You just cannot relocate it yet.

Spaceship compared with other places to buy a domain

Where you buyExtra buyer feeWho holds the moneyBest for
Spaceship SellerHubNone on Buy NowSpaceshipFixed price names with card or wallet checkout

Spaceship wins on simplicity. Paying for a $3,000 name feels like any online checkout, and the buyer is not asked to cover a card surcharge. Sedo, which we reviewed in is Sedo legit and what buyers pay, has more inventory but adds that surcharge on larger card payments.

Frequently asked questions

Is Spaceship a good domain registrar?

For most businesses, yes. Spaceship is ICANN-accredited, prices common extensions at or below the big registrars, and supports two-factor authentication, passkeys and registrar lock. Its weak spot in public reviews is support response time during account verification, so open and verify the account before the day you need it.

Is Spaceship domain legit for expensive names?

Yes. The same checkout handles a $100 name and a $50,000 one. For larger amounts, pay by wire or card rather than a method with no dispute process, keep the invoice, and confirm the domain shows in your account with you as registrant before you announce the brand.

Do I need a Spaceship account to buy a domain listed on SellerHub?

Yes. The name is delivered into a Spaceship account, and a Namecheap login will not work in its place. Creating the account takes a couple of minutes, and you can transfer the domain to another registrar later once the standard post-sale lock has passed.

How long does it take to get a domain bought on Spaceship?

A name already held at Spaceship can be moved to the buyer quickly after payment clears. One held at another registrar takes longer because a registrar transfer is involved. Our breakdown of how long it takes to buy and transfer a domain gives realistic timelines for each case.

Can I negotiate the price of a domain on Spaceship?

Only where the seller has enabled offers. Those listings show a make offer option with a minimum the seller will consider. Fixed price listings sell at the number shown, which is also the fastest route if you need the name this week.
