.AI vs .IO Domain Extension: Which TLD to Buy for Your Startup
The real tradeoff, with the numbers. One names your category and costs double to hold. The other is cheaper, deeper in the resale market, and carries a registry question nobody selling you a .io mentions.

Short answer
Buy .ai if the product is genuinely an AI product and you want the address itself to say so. Buy .io if you are shipping developer tooling, infrastructure or a general tech product, or if holding cost matters: a .io renews for about $52 a year against roughly $83 a year for a .ai, and .ai forces a two year minimum term, so $165 is the smallest commitment you can make. Google ranks both identically. The one asymmetry worth pricing in is registry risk: .io depends on the code IO staying in the ISO 3166-1 standard, and the Chagos Archipelago sovereignty transfer puts a question mark there that .ai does not have.

.AI vs .IO Compared on the Ten Things That Actually Decide It
Most comparisons stop at "io is for tech, ai is for AI". Here is the rest of it, including the parts that cost money later.
| Factor | .ai | .io | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Territory behind the code | Anguilla, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean | The British Indian Ocean Territory, the Chagos Archipelago | Tie |
| Registry operator | Identity Digital took over the .ai zone on 15 January 2025 | Identity Digital, which acquired the .io registry business with Afilias | Tie |
| Retail price per year | About $83 at Porkbun on 9 September 2026 | About $52 at Porkbun on the same day, with first year promotions near $28 | .io |
| Minimum term | Two years, mandated by the registry. There is no one year option, so about $165 up front | One year | .io |
| Five year carrying cost | Roughly $415 at current retail | Roughly $260 at current retail | .io |
| Google SEO treatment | Generic top level domain, not geo targeted to Anguilla | Generic top level domain, not geo targeted to the BIOT | Tie |
| Category signal | Says "this is an AI product" before anyone reads the tagline | Says "this is a technical product", without narrowing the category | .ai |
| Availability of short names | Genuinely open. One and two word names still surface regularly | Thinner. Fifteen years of tech adoption cleared out most of the good ones | .ai |
| Resale market depth | Hot but young, and tied to AI funding cycles | Fifteen years of comparable sales across two funding downturns | .io |
| Registry continuity risk | No live sovereignty question. Anguilla remains a British overseas territory | Open. Sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is moving to Mauritius, which could eventually put IO up for review in ISO 3166-1 | .ai |

Should You Buy a .AI or a .IO Domain?
The tiebreaker is rarely the extension itself. It is who reads your address and what they already expect from it.
Buy the .ai when
- + The model or the agent is the product, not a feature you bolted on last quarter
- + The exact word you want is gone on .io but still open on .ai, which happens often
- + You are raising, and investors are skimming a hundred decks a week looking for category fit
- + You want the shorter name and can absorb the higher renewal to get it
- + You would rather not think about ISO 3166-1 again for the life of the company
Buy the .io when
- + You ship developer tools, APIs, infrastructure or anything a technical buyer evaluates
- + AI is one capability inside a broader product and you do not want the extension defining you
- + You expect to pivot, and a neutral tech extension survives a change of direction
- + Renewal cost across a large portfolio genuinely matters to you
- + You want comparable sales going back over a decade before you commit five figures
The mistake that costs the most
Founders pick the extension first and then hunt for a word that is free on it. That is backwards, and it is how companies end up on a four syllable name nobody can spell. Start from the word. Find the name that is short, sayable and unambiguous, then take whichever of the two extensions it is actually available on. A great word on the "wrong" extension beats a mediocre word on the right one every single time, and no buyer has ever churned over a TLD.

All 35 .io namesAre .IO Domains Going Away?
No, not today. As of September 2026 the .io registry is fully operational, names register and renew normally, and IO is still an assigned code in the ISO 3166-1 standard. This is the single question that should inform a large .io purchase, so it is worth getting the facts right rather than the headlines.
The background: the United Kingdom and Mauritius signed a treaty over the Chagos Archipelago on 22 May 2025, moving sovereignty of the territory to Mauritius. Because .io is the country code extension assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory, that raised a reasonable question about what happens to the extension.
ICANN addressed it directly. It relies on ISO 3166-1 to decide which two letter codes exist, and in its own words, "IO persists in the ISO 3166-1 standard and there has been no change to the standard as a result of the announcement." ICANN goes on to say that a sovereignty change is "likely to trigger an evaluation of the circumstances by the committee that maintains the ISO 3166-1 standard", that "there is a possibility that IO may be removed as an assigned code", and that if that happened, "a five-year time window will commence during which time usage of the domain will need to be phased out."
Read that timeline carefully, because it is far longer than the panic suggests. The sovereignty transfer has to complete. The ISO 3166 maintenance agency then has to decide the code should go, which is not automatic: territories have kept their codes through political change before. Only after a removal does the five year clock start, and ICANN's policy allows that window to be extended once. In the realistic worst case a .io registrant has the better part of a decade of notice, which is longer than most startups exist.
What that means in practice: if you are registering a .io to ship a product this quarter, this is not a reason to hesitate. If you are writing a five figure check for a .io as a long term brand asset or as an investment to resell in 2035, it is a real discount factor and you should negotiate with it in hand. That is the honest split, and it is the reason .ai takes the continuity row in the table above while losing most of the cost rows.
Does .IO or .AI Rank Better in Google?
Neither. This is the most common worry about both extensions and it is the easiest one to put down.
Both are handled as generic
Google maintains a list of country code extensions it treats as generic because they are used globally rather than locally. Both .io and .ai sit on it, so neither site is geo restricted to a Caribbean or Indian Ocean territory.
The extension is not a ranking factor
Google has said repeatedly that the letters after the dot carry no ranking weight. A .io and a .ai with identical content, links and speed will rank identically. Your competition is not winning because of its TLD.
Age and links still decide it
What does move rankings is history. A name that has been live and linked for years starts ahead of a fresh registration, which is one practical argument for buying an established name rather than registering a brand new one.
How Much More Does a .AI Domain Cost Than a .IO?
About 60 percent more per year, and more than that in the first payment because of the minimum term. Checked at Porkbun on 9 September 2026, a .io lists at $51.80 for registration, renewal or transfer, with a first year promotion around $28.12. A .ai lists at $82.70 a year, and because the .ai registry mandates a two year minimum there is no one year option, so the smallest commitment is $165.09.
| Holding period | .ai at $82.70/yr | .io at $51.80/yr | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest possible first payment | $165.09 for two years | $51.80 for one year | $113.29 |
| Two years | $165.09 | $103.60 | $61.49 |
| Five years | $413.50 | $259.00 | $154.50 |
| Ten years | $827.00 | $518.00 | $309.00 |
Put that next to what you will pay for the name itself and the renewal gap stops mattering. A ten year difference of $309 is noise against a four or five figure acquisition price, and it is noise against one month of a single engineer. Where it does matter is portfolio scale: if you are holding fifty names, the .ai renewal bill is a real line item, and that is the case where the cheaper extension genuinely wins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is .ai or .io better?
Neither wins outright. Pick .ai when the product is genuinely an AI product and you want the extension to name your category on sight. Pick .io when you are building developer tooling, infrastructure or a general tech product, when renewal cost matters, or when you want a fifteen year track record behind the extension. Google ranks both identically.
Are .io domains going away?
Not today. As of September 2026 the .io registry is fully operational and IO is still an assigned code in ISO 3166-1. ICANN has said that if IO were ever removed from that standard, its retirement policy opens a five year window to phase the domain out, extendable once. Nothing has started that clock.
How much does a .io domain cost compared to a .ai?
A .io renews for roughly $52 a year at retail with a one year minimum term. A .ai carries a registry mandated two year minimum and retails around $83 a year, so about $165 is the smallest commitment you can make. Over five years the .ai carrying cost is roughly $414 against $259 for the .io.
Does .io hurt SEO?
No. Google treats .io as a generic top level domain rather than a country extension, so a .io site is not geo restricted to the British Indian Ocean Territory and carries no ranking handicap. The same is true of .ai. Content, links and site quality decide rankings, not the letters after the dot.
Which holds resale value better, .ai or .io?
.io has the deeper and longer resale record, with fifteen years of tech acquisitions behind it. Short .ai names have appreciated faster since 2022, but that market is younger and tracks AI funding cycles. Treat .ai as higher upside with higher volatility, and .io as the steadier of the two with an unresolved registry question attached.
Should I buy both the .ai and the .io?
Buy both only when the exact word is free on each and the combined price is a small share of your naming budget. Run the product on the one your buyers will type and redirect the other. For most seed stage teams the money is better spent on one genuinely short name than on two mediocre ones.
What about .com instead of either?
Still the safest choice when your buyers are mainstream or your name gets spoken aloud, and by far the cheapest to renew. The catch is supply: roughly 163.6 million .com names were registered as of 31 March 2026, so short one word options are effectively gone. We break that tradeoff down in our .AI vs .COM domain comparison.
Can I buy one of these names outright today?
Yes. Every name listed here is sold outright at the price shown on its card, with no monthly plan and no waiting on a counteroffer. Transfers run through Escrow.com and typically complete in three to five days.
