The short answer: Shopify sells unregistered domains directly in the admin for roughly $10 to $30 a year, with a typical .com around $11 to $16, including WHOIS privacy, automatic DNS, and SSL. What Shopify cannot sell you is a name somebody else already owns, and for short, brandable store names that is nearly always the situation. That is what a domain marketplace is for: you buy the name once on the aftermarket, keep it at any registrar, and connect it to Shopify with two DNS records.

How Much Does a Shopify Domain Cost?
Three different things get called a Shopify domain, and they are priced nothing alike. Here is what each one actually costs.
| Where you buy | Typical cost | What you get | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify admin, unregistered name | About $10 to $30 a year, .com usually $11 to $16 | Registration, auto-renew, free WHOIS privacy, DNS configured for you, SSL | Only works for names nobody has taken, which rules out most short brandables |
| Third-party registrar | Often $1 to $12 first year, then $15 to $25 | The same registration, sometimes with email hosting bundled | Introductory pricing jumps at renewal, and you configure DNS yourself |
| Domain marketplace, taken name | One time price, commonly a few hundred to a few thousand dollars | A short, spellable, already-established name plus escrow-backed transfer | Costs more up front, and you still pay the normal renewal each year afterward |
Registrar and registry pricing changes. Confirm the renewal rate, not just the first-year price, before you commit.
Should You Buy Your Domain Through Shopify?
It depends on one thing: whether the name you actually want is available.
If it is, buying inside the Shopify admin is the path of least resistance. The DNS is configured the moment you pay, the SSL certificate is issued automatically, WHOIS privacy is included rather than upsold, and the renewal price sits close to what you paid in year one. Compare that to registrars that advertise a $0.99 first year and quietly renew at $22, and the flat pricing is worth something on its own.
The problem is that for a serious store, the name you want is rarely available. Every obvious one-word .com in apparel, home goods, supplements, pet products, and beauty was registered a decade or more ago. What Shopify offers you instead is the long tail: the hyphenated version, the version with Shop or Co bolted on, the misspelling. Those names cost $14 a year and cost you far more than that in customers who type the wrong thing.
A name that is already registered can only be bought from whoever owns it, which is what a marketplace does. You pay once, the transfer runs through escrow, and afterward the name renews at the ordinary $12 to $22 a year like any other. The recurring cost is identical. The only difference is the one-time acquisition price, and for a store planning to spend real money on paid social, that price is usually smaller than a single month of ad budget.
What Makes a Good Shopify Store Domain
After you have looked at a few thousand store names, the ones that work share a short list of traits.
- It survives being said out loud. If a customer hears it in a podcast read or a friend mentions it at dinner, they should be able to type it correctly on the first try. That single test kills most clever spellings.
- Two words, not one long compound. Single-word .com names are largely gone or six figures. A pair of ordinary words reads cleanly and is still gettable, which is why the two-word domains pattern dominates modern DTC branding.
- No hyphens, no numbers. They get dropped in conversation, mistyped in the address bar, and read as low-trust on an invoice.
- Room to expand the catalog. Naming the store after your first product is a trap. If you sell one candle today and forty home goods next year, a narrow name becomes a rebrand.
- The handle is free too. Check the matching username on the platforms where you will advertise before you buy. A mismatched handle costs you compounding recognition on every ad you ever run.
If you are still generating candidates, our ecommerce domains collection and the online store domains shortlist are both filtered for names that pass these tests.
How to Connect a Domain You Bought Elsewhere to Shopify
Buying outside Shopify does not mean extra work. Connecting a name is four steps and typically takes under ten minutes of actual clicking.
Complete the purchase and take control
Buy the name through escrow, then either accept the push into your own registrar account or receive the authorization code and transfer it. Either way, you end up holding the domain in an account you control, which matters if you ever leave the platform.
Add the domain in Shopify settings
In your Shopify admin, open the domains settings and choose to connect an existing domain. Shopify will then show you the exact DNS values it expects, and it re-checks them until the connection verifies.
Point two DNS records at Shopify
At your registrar, set the root A record to the IP address Shopify displays, and point the www subdomain at Shopify with a CNAME. Remove any old parking or forwarding records for the same host, since a leftover record is the usual reason a connection stays unverified.
Set it primary and wait for SSL
Once verified, mark the new name as your primary domain so Shopify redirects the myshopify address to it. The SSL certificate is issued automatically and can take a short while. Propagation runs from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the previous TTL.
Shopify updates its interface regularly. Use the DNS values shown in your own admin rather than any figure copied from a blog post, including this one.

.Com, .Shop, or .Store for a Shopify Store?
Google treats all of these the same for ranking. The difference is what a shopper does when they half-remember your name.
| Extension | Recognition | Typical yearly cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| .com | Universal, the default a shopper types | About $12 to $22, aftermarket names cost more up front | Any US store that will run paid social or podcast ads |
| .shop | Growing, over 1.55 million registrations as of January 2023 | Cheap first year, renewals commonly $30 to $40 | A second brand, a regional store, or a campaign site |
| .store | Moderate, several hundred thousand registrations | Promotional first year, renewals often $50 or more | Stores whose exact .com is gone and who want the retail signal |
| .co | High among startups, sometimes mistyped as .com | Roughly $25 to $35 | DTC brands with an audience that already knows the extension |
The practical cost of a non-.com store name is the traffic that lands on the .com owner's page instead of yours. Weigh that against the one-time price of buying the .com outright.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Shopify domain cost?
Buying a standard domain through Shopify usually runs about $10 to $30 a year, with a typical .com around $11 to $16. Shopify includes WHOIS privacy, automatic DNS configuration, and an SSL certificate, and it renews at close to the same price rather than jumping after a discounted first year. Premium and aftermarket names are priced separately and cost considerably more.
Can I buy a domain somewhere other than Shopify and use it?
Yes. Shopify lets you connect a domain bought anywhere. You add it in the domain settings, point the root A record and the www CNAME at the values Shopify shows you, then set it as your primary domain once it verifies. Propagation takes minutes to hours. The name stays at your registrar, in your account.
Should I buy my domain through Shopify or from a marketplace?
Buy through Shopify when the exact name you want is unregistered, since the setup is automatic and the pricing is flat. Buy from a marketplace when the name is already owned by somebody, which is the usual case for short, brandable one and two word .com names. Shopify cannot sell you a name it does not have.
Do I need a .com for my Shopify store?
You do not need one, but for a US direct-to-consumer store it remains the safest choice. Shoppers type .com by default, it survives being read out loud in an ad or printed on a packing slip, and it never needs explaining in customer support. Options like .shop or .store are cheaper and work well for a second brand or a campaign site.
What makes a good domain name for a Shopify store?
Short, easy to spell after hearing it once, and free of hyphens and numbers. Two ordinary words usually beat one long compound. Avoid naming the store after a single product if you plan to expand the catalog, and check that the matching handle is free on the platforms where you will advertise before you commit.
Can I transfer a domain I already own into Shopify?
Usually yes, provided the name has been registered for at least 60 days, is unlocked at the current registrar, and you have a valid authorization code. Transferring moves billing and management to Shopify. Connecting instead of transferring is lower risk, and it keeps the name at a registrar you control if you ever migrate off the platform.
Is a premium domain worth it for a new store?
It is worth it once you are paying for traffic. Every dollar of ad spend runs through the name in the ad, the checkout, and the confirmation email, so a name people mistype leaks conversions on all three. If you have not spent anything on acquisition yet, start cheap and upgrade when the store proves out. Most listings here offer monthly payment plans for exactly that reason.
