Namecheap Marketplace Review, What Buyers Pay

Namecheap Marketplace is a legitimate place to buy a domain, and on a Buy Now listing you pay the price shown: the 10% commission comes out of the seller's payout. What catches buyers out is everything around the price. Every sale is final and non-refundable, the name keeps its old expiry date, and a 30-day lock stops you moving it to another registrar straight away. Know those three rules before you check out.

Is Namecheap Marketplace legit?

Yes. Namecheap is one of the largest ICANN-accredited registrars, and its marketplace (the help center calls it Namecheap Market) only lists domains that are already registered at Namecheap. A sale is therefore a move from the seller's account to yours inside the same registrar, not a transfer between two companies. There is no authorization code to chase and no stranger holding your money.

The fine print is stricter than most buyers expect, though. Namecheap's marketplace agreement says it is "not an auctioneer or an escrow agent", that completed transactions are final and non-refundable, and that Namecheap can reverse a domain sale. None of that makes it unsafe. It does mean your protection is the registrar's process, not a neutral escrow holding funds until you confirm delivery.

How much does it cost to buy a domain on Namecheap Marketplace?

On a Buy Now listing the price you see is the price you pay for the name. Namecheap describes "a flat commission of 10% for each Namecheap Market Buy Now transaction", and its marketplace terms treat that as a listing fee deducted from the seller's payout. The line most buyers miss is the registration term. Namecheap's help pages say the expiry date stays the same after a marketplace purchase and the domain is not renewed. If the seller listed a name with three weeks left on it, you inherit three weeks and pay the renewal yourself. Check the expiry date on the listing and add a year of renewal to your budget before you compare prices.

How do you pay on Namecheap Marketplace?

Buy Now purchases go through the normal Namecheap checkout. That means the major cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), PayPal, or Namecheap account funds, which you can top up with crypto. For a four-figure name, a card or PayPal is the simplest route. Auctions are different: to bid at all you need at least $100 in account funds, and new accounts need $1,000 in funds before they can place a bid of $10,000 or more. Auction winners have 72 hours to pay.

How long does it take to get a domain from Namecheap Marketplace?

Usually about an hour. Namecheap says a Buy Now sale normally takes about 1 hour to approve and can take up to 48 hours, and premium purchases can take up to 72 hours. Once approved, the domain appears in your account and you can change DNS. What you cannot do yet is leave. The marketplace terms place a 30-day "buy" lock on the name that blocks a transfer to another Namecheap account or another registrar, so plan to keep it at Namecheap for the first month.

Partner auctions are the exception to the fast path. Namecheap cross-lists some auctions from partners, adds a fee for them, and says delivery of some partner names cannot be guaranteed. If a launch date depends on the name, stick to a Buy Now listing held at Namecheap itself.

Can you negotiate on Namecheap Marketplace?

Not on a Buy Now listing. The price is fixed and there is no offer button, so your choices are to pay it or to contact the seller some other way. The "Make Offer" button you see when you search a taken domain on Namecheap is a separate service run by DomainAgents, with a $199 minimum offer and a $19.95 engagement fee whether or not the owner replies. Can I get a refund on a Namecheap Marketplace purchase?

In almost every case, no. The marketplace terms say all completed transactions are "final, irreversible, non-refundable, and ineligible for account credit". The one exception is an expired domain that its original owner renews during the redemption window, where Namecheap gives account credit or, at its discretion, a refund. So do your checks before you pay: search the name for trademark conflicts, look it up on the Wayback Machine, and read the expiry date on the listing.

What buyers complain about

The complaints on domain investor forums are specific rather than alarming. In a 2018 NamePros thread a seller reported a sale reversed after the payout hold, with the name returned. In a 2022 thread a buyer who won a Namecheap auction could not manage or push the name for about a week. And sellers in a December 2022 thread described the marketplace as mostly low-priced sales in the $5 to $30 range.

That last point tells you who the marketplace serves. It is a busy place for cheap and expiring names and for investors trading among themselves. It is thinner for the curated, brandable names a funded startup usually wants, which tend to sit on specialist marketplaces or with individual owners.

When Namecheap Marketplace is the right place to buy

If you already keep your domains at Namecheap and the name you want is a low-priced Buy Now listing, buying there is quick and cheap. The name lands in the account you already use, the seller carries the commission, and a sub-$100 name is not worth routing anywhere else. It is also where to look for an expiring name you have been watching.

What to do after you buy

Once the domain is in your account, set auto-renew on a card that will not expire this year, since the old expiry date carried over. Turn on two-factor authentication, point DNS at your site, and add email on the new name. Before launch, it is worth taking an hour to see which ads your competitors are running, so the first campaign on your new domain is not a guess.

Go in knowing the rules: no offers on Buy Now, no refunds after completion, the old expiry date carries over, and a 30-day lock keeps the name at Namecheap.
